OmniDiskSweeper Alternatives: the Free Size List, Plus an Action Plan
OmniDiskSweeper is the quiet veteran of Mac disk tools: launch it, and it recursively counts your files into a sorted list, biggest on top. It’s free — which is no mean feat — and after two decades it still rolls along quietly.
It’s also a list. That’s the whole app. DiskInsight is the OmniDiskSweeper alternative that kept the free size reckoning and added everything we wished OmniDiskSweeper had.
What OmniDiskSweeper is
A free utility from The Omni Group that scans a drive and shows a flat, sorted list of folders and files by size. Click a folder, drill down, repeat. It has been the go-to “what’s taking up all my space?” tool for as long as most Macs in your family have existed.
What it doesn’t do:
- No visualization — it’s a list, not a map. The treemap your brain wants isn’t there.
- No search — anything not in the currently expanded branch is invisible to you.
- No duplicate finder — same-named or same-content copies are just… rows.
- No cleanup guidance — it tells you the bytes; you’re on your own deciding what’s safe.
- No dev-cache awareness — DerivedData and node_modules are just folders like any other.
- No snapshots or live monitoring — scan, list, done.
For a free tool, that’s a fair trade. But the distance from “here’s the biggest folder” to “here’s what you can safely delete, staged for review” is exactly where DiskInsight does the work.
The honest table
| OmniDiskSweeper | DiskInsight | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | Free to analyze; Pro cleanup $9.99 once |
| Interface | Size-sorted list | Nine views (list, treemap, sunburst, flame, bubbles and more) |
| Search | No | Instant |
| Largest files | Yes (list) | Yes + filters by type/age |
| Duplicate finder | No | Content-hash exact (SHA-256) |
| Safe cleanup | No | Staged to Trash, your call |
| Developer caches | No | 20 curated locations |
| Updates | Occasional | 1.x updates included |
What you still lose by switching
The one thing OmniDiskSweeper has that DiskInsight doesn’t is nostalgia. Everything else — the size list, the drill-down, the “it’s just there and it works” ethos — DiskInsight does in a native app with the same lightweight feel. The list view is even one of our nine visualizers, so your muscle memory survives the move.
Every migration is free and reversible: DiskInsight analyzes without touching a single file until you explicitly stage a cleanup, and everything staged lands in the macOS Trash.
Using both
Some people run both: OmniDiskSweeper for the plain, no-frills list, DiskInsight when the question turns into “so what do I do about it?” That’s reasonable. But once the same list exists in DiskInsight with search, duplicate groups and a cleanup path attached, the reason to keep the second app shrinks.
Try it
Scan your whole drive free and sort by largest files in seconds. When you want to act on what you find, Pro unlocks the rest — once, forever.
