DaisyDisk Alternatives: a Paid Map vs a Free Map With Cleanup Tools
DaisyDisk is the category classic: a gorgeous sector-style disk map, clockwork-fast scans (“Finder takes minutes; DaisyDisk takes 15 seconds,” its site says), a Mac App Store Editors’ Choice, and a proud little line about how 26,200 Apple and Pixar employees use it. We respect it a lot. If you own it and it works, keep it.
But it’s a paid map, and a map is mostly what it is. DiskInsight is the DaisyDisk alternative that makes the map free and spends the money on cleanup tools instead.
What DaisyDisk is
A one-time paid Mac disk app built around one beautiful sunburst-style visualization. It scans fast, it treats hard links and clones sensibly, it can scan as administrator to expose “Other” and system data. Cleanup works by pointing at the map and removing items to the Trash.
What it doesn’t do:
- One view. The map is the whole show — no list, bubbles, flame, mind-map, age or search-first modes.
- No dev-cache toolkit. DerivedData and node_modules are just pixels on the map.
- No duplicate finder at all — duplicates are just pixels on the map.
- No snapshots or growth diffing, and no system monitor.
- Paid from day one — its Mac App Store version puts the map behind the price tag; DiskInsight’s analyzer needs no license at all.
The honest table
| DaisyDisk | DiskInsight | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | One-time paid | Free to analyze; Pro cleanup $9.99 once |
| Seeing your disk before paying | Trial window, or paid on the store | Free, unlimited |
| Visualization | One sector map | Nine views (treemap, sunburst, flame, bubbles, mind map, age map, top sizes, list, folders) |
| Search | Manual navigation | Instant, names + paths |
| Duplicate finder | None | Content-hash exact (SHA-256) |
| Developer caches | Map only | 20 curated cleanup targets |
| Snapshots / monitor | No | Snapshot diff + live system monitor |
| Cloud storage scanning | Yes | Local only |
| Privacy | Local | 100% local, zero telemetry |
The cloud row is the one we lose on. DaisyDisk can peek into some cloud drives; DiskInsight is deliberately a pure local-disk tool — nothing about your files ever leaves the machine, and our privacy policy says so in detail.
What you still lose by switching
If you rely on DaisyDisk’s cloud-storage scanning, you’d miss it. If you’ve built muscle memory around the sector map, the treemap will feel different at first — then you’ll discover the other eight views. And DaisyDisk’s speed claim is fair; we match it: a full disk scan in seconds-to-a-minute, viewable from any visualizer without a rescan.
Why the price model is the point
DaisyDisk prices its map itself; DiskInsight shows you the entire disk free, forever, and only charges when you want the cleanup buttons — for less than a coffee subscription. If a disk analyzer can’t convince you on its map alone, you shouldn’t have to pay for the privilege of finding out.

Map your whole drive free in under a minute — caches and big-file targets included — and decide after you’ve seen it.
