Why we built DiskInsight
Disk space shouldn’t be a mystery. For years, the same tools have used the same metaphors — bar charts, pie graphs, and big red “Delete” buttons that make everyone nervous.
We wanted something different.
The problem
Every Mac user eventually asks the same question: “Where did all my space go?” Built-in tools answer with a colorful pie chart that tells you nothing about where to look. Cleaning tools delete blindly. And the developer cache problem — gigabytes of Xcode DerivedData, npm caches, Docker leftovers — is the quiet elephant in the room for every developer.
Our approach
DiskInsight was built around three principles:
-
Visualize everything first. Before you clean anything, you should see exactly what you have and where it lives. Nine visualizers aren’t excessive — different drives, different problems, different views.
-
Never delete behind the user’s back. Every cleanup goes to the macOS Trash. Nothing is permanent. No background deletion. Always confirm.
-
Stay local. Your disk is your business. No cloud, no telemetry, no accounts.
How we pay for it
No ads, no data selling, no account farms. DiskInsight is a one-time purchase: pay once at the launch price, get a license key instantly by email, and keep every 1.x update free. That’s the whole business model.
What’s next
Version 1.0 is our starting point. We have plans for smarter duplicate detection, scheduled monitoring, and deeper Xcode and developer-tool workflows — but we wanted to ship what we have and let it speak for itself first.
Try it. Tell us what you think.
